About Canterbury

Canterbury is steeped in culture and history with the famous Canterbury Tales taking front stage. The tales were one of the first major works in literature written in English and considered one of the most important works of medieval literature. Forming part of the World Heritage Site is Canterbury Cathedral, built in 597, it is one of the oldest Christian structures in England.

The city benefits from a mix of properties from Edwardian and Victorian to modern new builds. It is surrounded by attractive villages and popular places to live including Chartham, Blean, Wingham, Littlebourne, Bridge, Ickham and Wickhambreaux.

Local amenities

Canterbury is home to several well-known national supermarkets such as Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda. Within the city centre, there are smaller convenient stores including Tesco Metro, Sainsbury’s Local and Costcutter. Alongside the supermarkets, the city hosts independent boutique shops, post offices, hair salons, medical practices and sports centres.

The city has a great variety of schools, with grammar and private education available. Leisure and pleasure

There is an abundance of things to do in Canterbury for residents. In the heart of the city is Whitefriars, the biggest shopping centre in East Kent. There are high-street retailers, phone shops, banks, lifestyle shops and fast food places, the centre has everything you need for your shopping day out.

For fresh air, there are nearby gardens and parks in and around the city. Take a walk alongside the River Stour where historic punting tours are carried out or swing a golf club at Canterbury Golf Club and Driving Range.

Situated in the centre, The Marlowe Theatre aims to bring the best of everything, enjoy Shakespeare, musicals or stand-up. You will also have a large selection of restaurants to choose from with cuisines from all around the world including Italian, Indian and Moroccan.

Travel links

The city has excellent travel links to London, making it a favourable location for commuters. For rail travel, there are two train stations in the city: Canterbury West and Canterbury East. Canterbury West brings you directly into London in approximately an hour and the Canterbury East line takes you down the coast to Dover. Canterbury also has convenient road links, with the A2 connecting to the M2 motorway. Drive towards the capital or head to the Port of Dover in the other direction.
