Position:

Wye is a historic village in Kent located 12 miles from Canterbury and approximately 16 miles from Ashford.

History:

In days long ago a dense forest covered the low ground in Kent so travellers to France made their way along the North Downs. They dropped down to Wye to the ford on the River Stour and so a hamlet grew up, first near the river providing rest and comfort for travellers. Gradually the settlement has spread uphill to the present centre. In Saxon times Wye was a royal manor. The King regularly held court at Wye. Wye railway station was built when the line from Ashford to Margate was opened on 1st December 1846 by the South Eastern Railway.

Interesting Facts:

On the Downs east of the village is a crown (hill figure) carved in the chalk by students in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. Wye means ‘heathen temple’.

Road and Rail Links:

A28 runs between Ashford and Canterbury. There is a regular bus service to Ashford and Canterbury. Wye has its own train station, there is also Ashford International Station which is 3.7 miles away.
